Project Reflection
Through this project I learned a lot about correct pronunciations and accents. When we were practicing for the final exhibition we read multiple books, as well as our own, out loud to our peers and I learned so much about how to pronounce words correctly. While we were reading, I could hear if an inflection was off or if something sounded wrong when my partner was reading, and I could also catch that mistake and help them fix it. Because of this practice, I was able correct myself when I was reading. When I was working on this project, something that was pretty challenging for me was the picture aspect of the book. My mom has actually visited Chusli, Nicaragua and so she had pictures that I used in my book. However, I had to go through a tedious task of scanning them in and re-sizing them to fit the pages of my book and then printing them. It is crazy the shortage of color printers in my life. Once I got past that difficulty, I was actually surprised at how much I enjoyed cutting and pasting creative frames for the text and images in my book. Something about the simplistic, repetitive procedures brought me back to when life wasn't so busy and there was an hour in school allotted for sleeping. *gasp!*
Del Alma Exhibition
After we finished writing our stories, we got to go to one of two elementary schools in the area and read to children. I went to Needham Elementary school, but many of my peers went to Park Elementary as well. When we got to our exhibition site, we were put in groups with classmates and one kid. Then we got to read out story to them and read a story that they had picked out. Some of the children we read to couldn't speak Spanish, and so it was really interesting to translate our books while we were reading them. Mistakes galore! For me, this was such an exciting, unique experience and I am so glad that I got to take part of it. I think the best part was getting to be corrected by the kids we were reading to. At first, this was hard, but the I realized I needed to step off my high-horse and laugh at myself making mistakes and being corrected by a child. As soon as I let go of my pride, I loosened up and the experience was so much more meaningful and impacted me much deeper than it might have if I hadn't just let go a little.
La Vida de Anparo en ChusliWondering what it was like to hear me reading my book in Spanish? Now you have that chance with the all new edition of the YouTube player! Just kidding...I don't think YouTube has been updated in a while. Actually I know that for sure because I spend way too much time on YouTube. But that's beside the point. To your left you will find the cover of my book and a recording of me reading it for your amusement in Spanish. Yes, my pronunciation is a bit off, as well as my infliction on words, however I am very proud of how beautiful my work is, considering I only have 3 months of practice behind me.
