ARTE Y LITERATURA/ART AND LITERATURE
In Spanish 3, we were given a layered project that allowed us to discover art and literature. We started the project as a class, studying different pieces of art from several time periods and movements. During a slideshow of art, we identified different symbols and patterns in the art. As a class, we discussed the meaning and purpose behind the specific pieces of the art. This process allowed us to analyze art and find meaning in different masterpieces through history. With our base of art analyzing tools, we then selected a latino artist in a specific period of time to study. After selecting an artist, we chose one of their pieces of artwork to replicate. I selected the modernism artist Luis Felipe Noe’s painting Instante Decisivio. My peer also selected this same painting and so when I replicated the painting using my own interpretation, my final image is slightly different than the original painting.
The second part of this project incorporated literature. We selected a piece of literature from our time period and annotated the piece. With the literature, we then wrote an essay in Spanish that compared the art in the modernism period to the style of writing found in the selected piece of literature. I read Oda la Alcachofa by Pablo Neruda and compared it to the different painting techniques used in modernism painting such as symbolism, impressionism and non-traditional narration.
The last stage of our project required us to go back to art from our literature. Many of my peers decided to create an image of the subject of the poem. Instead of taking a literal interpretation of the poem to the canvas, I decided to use the characteristics of modern art that I wrote about to create an original image. Through this three layer process, we were really able to explore art and literature from the past.
During this project I was challenged to stay motivated. I enjoy painting and producing a refined final piece of art, but I had a hard time finding the motivation to complete my art for this class. In particular, I struggled to find content for my original art piece. I immediately began looking at images that I could copy and had to keep reminding myself that I was creating a piece of art from my own imagination. To overcome this challenge, I gave myself a whole evening to just focus on painting and let my pallet direct the outcome of the art piece.
If I had the opportunity to redo any part of this project, it probably would be the second piece of art. I felt that my final piece of art was satisfactory, but it was not what I had envisioned when I began painting. I know that if I had harnessed my motivation, I would have been able to produce a piece I was truly proud of. This is one of the parts of my project I wish I was able to redo. Now that I have a final image, I see that there is extensive room for improvement. My lack of contentedness with this painting would motivate me to redo this particular part of the project and I would be able to push myself to achieve beautiful work.
