OVERVIEW
¡Hola! Mi llamo Marley. Soy muy baja y bonita. Tengo moreña pelo y ojos, pero me gusta azul ojos mucho. Tengo quince años, y mi hermano menor tiene diez años. Vivo en Durango, Colorado con mis madre, hermano y perro. Me gusta corro y escribo. En el fin de semana, yo paso tiempo con mis amigos y mi chico. En la verano, yo nado en el rio y acampo con mi familia y amigos.
During our sophomore year at AHS we are required to take a foreign language. Surprisingly I have really enjoyed myself during Spanish 1 and I am so thrilled to be learning a second language. I think that this is a really important of my education because the Spanish speaking population in the US is huge and with this language I will be more successful in my career than if I wasn't given this opportunity. "I just luff thschool thso muth!" *nerdy moment*

LA POESIA DE LA COMIDA
At the beginning of the project, we worked on food vocabulary which was incredibly exciting because I love eating. A lot. Then, we chose a country to study. For our country we researched traditional foods and chose one to focus on. We found a recipe for this food and then we translated it into Spanish. My country was Perú and I chose to cook Papa Rellenas. This food is ground beef, boiled eggs, black olives and tomatoes all chopped up and cooked and then wrapped with mashed potatoes and deep fried. During this part of the project we created a table of the Spanish words used in the recipe that we didn't know and their English translation. This was really helpful for me to learn more cooking vocabulary than we had been provided with. While we were working on translation, we got to read Pablo Neruda's odes to food and got a sense for Spanish poetry to a food. After translating our recipe, we chose one main ingredient for the dish. Then we wrote odes to that specific part of the dish. Through this, I learned many description words that appealed to the senses. Also, I got to write something more creative and more free formed than the other straight forward pieces from the rest of the class. For final exhibition, we had to cook our final dish and serve it to the public. Along with this, we were required to read our ode to the audience.I feel like through this project I was was really engaged and excited about the writing piece. One thing that really helped me was cooking my dish before exhibition. I practiced and then I knew what I needed to do to make my final dish a success. . When I was working on my ode, I had to describe the food, but I don't eat any animal products so I actually had my family describe the practice round meal to my. I placed a recorder on the table and had them describe the food and then used those descriptions in my final ode to insure it was accurate. I really enjoyed this project and was fully engaged the entire time. The only thing I would have changed would have been to make the Rellenas the night before so all I had to do before exhibition was deep fry them. Other than that I feel like this project was a success.
ARTE, CULTURA y LENGUA
During this project we worked through multiple Spanish speaking artists and their styles. We studied Antonio Gaudi, Francisco Goya, Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera, Salvador Dali, Diego Velazquez and Pablo Picasso. Then we chose an artist as a mentor and studied that particular artist in depth individually. For my research, I chose Pablo Picasso because the colors that he used in his blue period really spoke to me. Also, I chose to incorporate part of Frida Kahlo's work because when I saw the heart that she used in her paintings I thought of passion and I felt a strong urge to the anatomical heart.
BORN NOT IN THE USA
For this project we researched a Spanish speaking country and really got waist deep in their cultures, traditions and ways of life. Something that was really neat about this project was how I could put myself in the position of someone my age living in that country and visualize what it would be like if I was born in a different country. After we had a substantial amount of research, we then took our vocabulary and grammatical skills and put them to the test through the form of a children's book. This was one of the most exciting projects I have done this year. I was so excited to be writing something easy, but for it to still be challenging. I also loved the idea that we were going to be presenting our stories to children who probably could speak more of the language than we could. Again and again I see examples of younger generations teaching their elders something new and it truly gives me goosebumps of excitement to see those generational barriers disintegrated.
